JBC Term 4: Exodus
How do we come to understand and apply a book of the Bible – faithful to the text, and relevant to life? Particularly when it comes to the Old Testament, misapplications abound, ranging from legalism (“follow the law to find God’s favour”) to allegorising (“have you had your burning bush experience?”) to non-engagement (“the Old Testament is no longer applicable”). Using the Book of Exodus as our example, this course offers a methodology for interpreting a passage of scripture and connecting it to the context in which we live. We will deal with some of the key topics raised by Exodus, such as: God’s identity, our identity, rescue, law, land, and idolatry.
